Executive Director of Disability Resource Services

Muskingum University invites applications for the position of Executive Director of Disability Resource Services. The Executive Director provides visionary leadership in the management, administration, and strategic planning efforts related to the provision of disability services to students of the University. Student Accessibility Services provides students with permanent or temporary disabilities reasonable accommodations following the American Disabilities Act guidelines. The Executive Director also has oversight of the University's PLUS program, which provides innovative and dedicated, fee-based, academic support for students with learning differences. 

This position plays a critical role in advancing student success, ensuring accessibility, and fostering an inclusive learning environment that supports students with disabilities across the university.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures that students with disabilities who experience barriers in the design of University programs, services, and facilities have equal access through the provision of accommodations.
  • Develops action and/or accommodation plans with, and for, students experiencing barriers by conducting interviews, collaborating with the student, and reviewing medical documentation.
  • Develop staff capacities to assess and address areas of need in service to students.
  • Advocate success and equal opportunity for students with disabilities.
  • Assist and counsel the University and its units regarding disability support and compliance.
  • Oversee day-to-day administration of Disability Resources Services.
  • Manage the budgets of Student Accessibility Services and PLUS.
  • Supervise and evaluate Disability Resources Services staff.
  • Oversee Student Accessibility Services and PLUS websites.
  • Assist in the production of promotional and informational materials.
  • Promote PLUS to prospective parents and students.
  • Represent the University and promote its disability services at conferences, college fairs, and through visits to high schools.
  • Mentor Disability Resources Services staff in areas for growth, conflict management, and development of leadership skills.
  • Implement initiatives to support compliance, efficiency, and excellence.
  • Facilitate on-going training, technical assistance and consulting services to faculty, staff, administration, and students, in such areas as universal design and reasonable accommodations
  • Serve as the University’s designated ADA/504 Coordinator, including maintaining a current understanding of ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and best practices for working with individuals with disabilities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Master's degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Disability Studies, Special Education, Developmental Education, Psychology, or related area. 
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a higher education setting working with students with disabilities, or in working with students with disabilities who are entering post-secondary education. 
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of current federal, state and local laws, policies, practices, and literature on the full range of disability services in higher education. 
  • Strong working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. 
  • Knowledge of best practices, current trends, and industry standards in providing disability services in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing disability documentation and conducting interactive processes to determine and provide accommodations. 
  • Experience using assistive technologies. 
  • Demonstrated record of administrative and budget management, program development, event planning, and departmental operations management. 
  • Strong communication, supervisory, training and mentoring skills, along with skills in building effective coalitions and partnerships to achieve university, and unit missions and goals.
  • Experience with computer databases, spreadsheets, and assessment and measurement tools. 
  • Ability to travel regularly to represent the University and promote its disability services at conferences, college fairs, and through visits to high schools. 
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a strong team of professionals dedicated to student success, and to the superior provision of services.
