Job Description

FULL TIME, EXEMPT POSITION; YMCA OF GREATER NASHUA; Westwood Park YMCA

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Senior Director of Wellness, the Director of Wellness leads the health and wellness experience at the Westwood Park branch — overseeing personal training, small group training, athlete programming, and wellness floor operations while building a team and culture that helps every member set goals, find community, and thrive.

The Director of Wellness builds upon distinctive athletic culture at Westwood Park — establishing a sports performance program that serves athletes of all ages alongside the broader membership community — while ensuring that every touchpoint reflects the Y’s mission of building healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

LEADERSHIP & CULTURE

  • Model servant leadership in every interaction with trainers, branch staff, and members.
  • Establish and maintain high standards of hospitality, professionalism, and service across the wellness floor and all training areas.
  • Build meaningful relationships with members beyond the training floor, supporting a sense of belonging and community at the branch.
  • Using Listen First skills, create an environment that encourages members to get involved in programs, volunteerism, and philanthropy — helping them become advocates for the Y’s cause.
  • Collaborate with the Group Exercise Coordinator to ensure a robust schedule of free group exercise offerings — guided by class attendance, member feedback, and industry trends.

OPERATIONS & STRATEGY

  • Implement and execute all operational standard operating procedures (SOPs) including administrative duties, client outreach, CRM documentation, and staff accountability.
  • Develop and manage the department budget; demonstrate sound fiscal management and program financial oversight.
  • Maintain wellness equipment and facilities — ensuring cleanliness, safety, and readiness for member use and minimizing risk.
  • Work with the Westwood Park Leadership Team to develop, implement, and manage operating plans that promote programs and membership growth.
  • Partner with the marketing and communications department to ensure effective promotion and visibility of all program areas.
  • Work closely with the Director of Healthy Living to ensure proper support for chronic disease prevention and medically integrated wellness programming.
  • This role is designed as an in-person position to support team collaboration, member engagement, and community presence

 PROGRAMMING & MEMBER EXPERIENCE

  • Build and maintain up to 15 hours of direct service in personal training or small group training.
  • Create and build upon a distinctive athletic aesthetic at Westwood Park.
  • Develop and grow a Sports and Athlete Training Program serving athletes of all ages through personalized, small group, and team training programs.
  • Manage and grow a small group training program targeting both athletic and general adult populations.
  • Oversee member onboarding and the needs analysis process — ensuring every new member receives a personalized introduction to the wellness department through Smart Start orientations and ongoing touchpoints.
  • Nurture deepening connections and involvement, helping members find meaningful activities that help them learn, grow, and thrive.
  • Champion the member experience by actively seeking feedback and identifying opportunities to improve service delivery.
  • Work with local businesses, sports teams, and community groups to improve the health of the greater Nashua community.

TEAM DEVELOPMENT

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and lead a team of trainers and instructors for the Westwood Park branch with a focus on achievement, belonging, and connection.
  • Conduct monthly professional development conversations with each trainer, partnering on specific action steps tied to their financial, career, and education goals.
  • Lead the onboarding of new trainers through their full onboarding period, establishing a strong foundation in session delivery, programming, and member engagement.
  • Assist the Senior Wellness Director in crafting and facilitating bi-monthly team meetings that drive alignment, education, and culture.
  • Ensure trainers are proficient with all branch equipment, including functional training systems (MX4, TRX, kettlebell, barbell).
  • Hold regular department staff meetings to train, coach, and provide updates and brainstorming on branch initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED

  • Current NCCA-accredited personal training certification (NASM, ACE, NSCA, ACSM, or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 2+ years of related experience, including supervisory and program development experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing fitness and wellness staff teams.
  • Skills and knowledge in developing and implementing a wide range of wellness programs, including hiring, training, and supervision of staff and volunteers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from employees, members, and community partners.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certified (or ability to certify prior to start date).

 PREFERRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • Experience working with youth athletes and/or sports performance programming.
  • Background in semi-private or small group training program design and management.
  • Experience with budget management and financial oversight.
  • Additional specialty certifications (CSCS, Precision Nutrition, FMS, etc.).

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires the ability to actively demonstrate exercises and equipment usage on the wellness floor. Must be able to stand, walk, and be physically active for extended periods. The role operates in a dynamic, member-facing environment and requires flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities. Some evening and weekend hours may be required based on branch needs.
